Frequently Asked Questions

Antacids work fast to neutralise stomach acid already present in your stomach, relieving indigestion, heartburn and upset stomach. MYLANTA® Original and Double Strength formulae also contain an "anti-flatulent" which quickly relieves wind pain by dissipating excess gas bubbles in the stomach. MYLANTA® 12 Hour Action however, actually works to reduce the amount of stomach acid your body produces. It does this by blocking the receptor connections which release acid into the stomach. It takes a little longer than regular MYLANTA® Antacids, but provides much longer lasting relief - all day or all night - with a single tablet.

MYLANTA® Antacids provide relief within minutes which lasts for up to 3 hours. MYLANTA® 12 Hour Action provides relief within 1 hour which lasts for up to 12 hours.

It is not uncommon for pregnant women to suffer from indigestion and heartburn. This usually occurs because of an increase in abdominal pressure and changes in hormone levels. As with all medications during pregnancy, please speak to your doctor.

We recommend that you consult your doctor before using MYLANTA® if your child is under 12 years of age. MYLANTA® Antacids are not generally recommended for newborns, unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.

MYLANTA® Antacids contain aluminium hydroxide. Aluminium is not well absorbed by the body when administered orally to patients with normal renal function. There does not appear to be a risk of aluminium accumulation after use of MYLANTA® Antacids.

When used as directed, adverse effects of MYLANTA® Antacids are minimal for individuals with normal renal function. MYLANTA® Antacids contain aluminium and magnesium salts. Magnesium salts may cause diarrhoea, while aluminium salts may cause constipation. MYLANTA® Antacids are formulated to give a balance of these 2 salts, hence avoiding either side effect. If these symptoms should arise, please consult a doctor.

Both aluminium and magnesium (found in MYLANTA® Antacids) are mostly not absorbed after oral administration. They are unlikely to be excreted into the breast milk when used as an antacid. You should consult your doctor before using MYLANTA® 12 Hour Action if you are breastfeeding. All MYLANTA® products should be used only as directed.

Heartburn symptoms are quite varied. Some people may experience nausea, a burning sensation behind the breast bone and even regurgitation of food or liquid.

If you suffer from gastric ulcers, you should consult a doctor, who will be able to prescribe the appropriate medication.

MYLANTA® Antacids may interact with other medications. Depending on the medication, it may be advisable to take MYLANTA® Antacids 1 -2 hours apart from other medications. MYLANTA® 12 Hour Action should be used under the supervision of a doctor if you are taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines.

MYLANTA® Antacids can be taken 3-4 times daily, when symptoms appear. Dosage amount depends on which MYLANTA® variant is used. MYLANTA® 12 Hour Action can be taken twice daily, at 12 Hour intervals. In either case, if your condition persists after 14 days, you should consult a doctor.

The greatest secretion of acid occurs in the stomach within the first hour of eating. Heartburn results from irritation of the oesophagus by acidic stomach contents. It is recommended MYLANTA® Antacids be taken after a meal.

Unfortunately there is little information regarding the long-term use of MYLANTA® antacids. MYLANTA® antacids should not be taken for extended periods without medical supervision as this may mask possible underlying conditions.
